(Medina, OH) -- The three young women who survived a decade of captivity and indescribable abuse in the headline-grabbing Cleveland kidnapping case are this year's winners of the Ohio Courage Awards. Governor John Kasich told the crowd Monday he still marvels at the young women's inner strength and perseverance.
Berry, DeJesus and Knight were kidnapped, separately, by one-time school bus driver Ariel Castro and held in his Cleveland house for a decade or longer. They were freed last May when Berry banged on a locked door and yelled to a neighbor for help. Castro committed suicide in prison last September, one month after he was sentenced to life plus a thousand years.
