Punxsutawney Phil Not The Only Weather-Predicting Groundhog
(Punxsutawney, PA) -- Punxsutawney Phil may hog all the attention, but he isn't alone when it comes to weather-predicting groundhogs. Buckeye Chuck is the official State Groundhog in Ohio. General Beauregard Lee, Ph.D., is Georgia's Official Weather Prognosticator. Staten Island Chuck hails from New York, Sir Walter Wally is famous in North Carolina, and Jimmy the Groundhog lords over the "official Groundhog Capital of the World," Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. By the way, actual accredited weather forecasters say groundhogs are about as reliable at predicting the weather as Mattel's famous toy the Magic 8-Ball.
As the legend goes, if Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his western Pennsylvania burrow Sunday morning and it's cloudy, an early spring is on the way. If it's sunny and Phil sees his shadow, winter weather will continue for six more weeks. Sunday's forecast calls for clouds with a 50 percent chance of rain. Phil's scheduled to make his prediction at 7:25 a.m Eastern, and you can check it out live by logging on to Groundhog.org.
